Thalavadi occupies a sparsely populated, forested area on the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet. Large parts of the taluk lie within or adjacent to the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, giving it high ecological importance.
